Unmanned Aircraft Systems or Drones

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or drones, have become a popular tool in many different areas, from aerial photography to functioning as reconnaissance aircraft in disaster areas.

The Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) system is a requirement for operating approvals in a Class D airspace. Listed below are our recommendations:

  • Request authorization with the "Flight Ready" LAANC system at least one day in advance for auto-approval areas.
  • Submit requests for areas "requiring further coordination" near the airport at least three weeks in advance.
  • Call the tower manager before operating.
  • Follow the rules and regulations outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration.

To learn more, visit the LAANC for Industry page at faa.gov.
